New Australian Social Media Age Restrictions: Information for Families

As of December 10, 2025, new Australian legislation will require social media platforms to prevent anyone under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and Facebook. This legislation emerged from widespread community concerns and feedback from parents seeking support in setting digital boundaries in their households, as they compete against platforms designed to maximise engagement. While families may have different views on this approach, the law aims to support parents by shifting responsibility from individual households to the platforms themselves.

The restrictions apply to platforms that primarily facilitate social interaction and user-generated content sharing. Messaging apps like WhatsApp, gaming platforms like Minecraft, and educational tools are currently excluded unless they develop social media-like features. Platforms that don't comply face significant penalties, and age verification will use privacy-protecting technologies rather than requiring personal ID uploads.

Regardless of individual perspectives on this legislation, families now have an opportunity to plan how this change will work for their household. Starting conversations early with children, helping them preserve valued content, exploring alternative platforms, and establishing new routines together can help make this transition smoother. Each family can decide how to approach this change in a manner that suits their specific circumstances.
